This is a unique collaboration between two artists: Liz Sheridan and Cedric Christie, with the support of Valley Kayaks. Liz Sheridan plans to make contemporary voyages of discovery around the shorelines of Europe in a sea kayak specially decorated by Cedric Christie. The artwork is thus a combination of the boat itself, the performance of the journeys and the documentation of the discoveries made in the process.
The idea for the project came when Liz Sheridan, doctor, artist and sea-kayaker, and Cedric Christie, an internationally acclaimed artist, were working together on a commission at the Royal London Hospital.
The Boat (Valley Nordkapp LV) is a classic British-designed and built model and will be adorned with the names of explorers of the past disguised as corporate logos. This is a progression of an established theme of Christie’s work, which started with his decorating old cars to make them look, at first glance, like rally cars; closer inspection shows them to be themed with the names of the artists invited to participate in the Kassel Documenta.
Launch: Explorations into the Known World is planned to be launched as part of the Venice Biennale fringe on the weekend 5 -7 June 2009. Sheridan intends to paddle the kayak round the canals of Venice to coincide with the opening events. This setting reflects the origins of the idea in her experience of taking part in the Vogalonga, a mass participation rowing and paddling event around the lagoon of Venice, where she had a sudden realisation of the full potential of the kayak as a means of gaining a deeper understanding of apparently familiar places.
First Journey: The launch will lead on to the first journey later in June 2009, a trip with a small group of paddlers from around Europe along the Italian coast, from Venice towards Trieste and the Slovenian and Croatian borders in search of the remains of the once glorious Venetian Empire, which will be documented using photography, film footage and the collection of found objects.
Exhibition: This is hoped to lead to an exhibition in London later on in the year (including the kayak itself) as well as live web-based records hosted by London-based Arts collective Tangent Projects, who will continue to support and document the journeys.
Further journeys, some solo and some in the company of other paddlers are planned, continuing the exploration of the coastlines of Britain and the European mainland, following in the spirit of the explorers of the past to make new discoveries about the overlooked places on the margins of our overcrowded continent.
