Day 5, June 25: Grado - Grignano

weather: sunny and warm, heavy showers, light wind from NW
paddle along coast against an incoming tide, past the mouth of the Isonzo river, reeds and swans out on the open sea.

Cross 7.5km and a shipping lane going into the port of Monfalcone and enter a different world.

Leave behind flat wetlands and wild, open marshes and find instead limestone cliffs and crystal clear waters.

Lunch in little harbour at Sistiana, then down the coast, on one side dozens of brightly coloured floats (possibly marking lobster pots but we never got round to asking) on the other tropical wooded cliffs, the remains of abandoned terraces converted into gardens and summer houses (with a number of native inhabitants sporting an all over tan!). It feels like we are in another country.

Arrive Grignano and begins to pour with rain, gives the whole place a rather morbid air and sense of menace, try to check into a "Guest House" but are told it is a private one connected to he Bond-style Institute of Theoretical Physics, so check into Hotel Mignon intead, also decorated with a rather gothic air.

As the evening goes on it stops raining, the summer students emerge from the institute and everything becomes normal again.
